چکیده
Markov chains are a popular means to capture correlated random processes for characterization and analysis of error pattern or bursty traffic in data transmission. The performance evaluation of communication protocols based on Markov models is tractable with limited state space and often depends on efficient implementation. Simulation or other methods have to be adopted for system of higher complexity. We study the effect of bit errors on transmitted packets for Markov error processes in the presence of error detecting or error correcting codes. We show that the evaluation for 2-state Markov channels leads the same 2-state channel characteristics also for packet errors, where parameters are determined by a recursive and closed form solution depending on the parameters of the bit error channel. Computation schemes are derived for random and burst error detecting and correcting codes whose computation effort is shown to be moderate and generally tractable for usual packet sizes in telecommunication. Keywords—2-state Markov processes, error detection, random and burst error correcting codes, residual error rate.

Performance evaluation of burst-error-correcting codes on a Gilbert-Elliott channel
In this letter the performance of single burst-errorcorrecting (BEC) codes used over bursty channels is evaluated. The channel is represented by the Gilbert–Elliott (GE) model, which has been used by numerous authors to evaluate the performance of random-error-correcting (REC) codes over bursty channels. Recursive expressions are derived, which are used in evaluating the probability of a codewo...
متن کاملMaximum runlength-limited codes with error control capabilities
New methods are presented to protect maximum runlength-limited sequences against random and burst errors and to avoid error propagation. The methods employ parallel conversion techniques and enumerative coding algorithms that transform binary user information into constrained codewords. The new schemes have a low complexity and are very efficient. The approach can be used for modulation coding ...
متن کاملOptimal 2-D Interleaving for Robust Multimedia Transmission
Interleaving is a process to rearrange code symbols so as to spread bursts of errors over multiple codewords that can be corrected by random error correction codes (ECCs). By converting bursts of errors into random-like errors, interleaving thus becomes an effective means to combat error bursts. In this paper, we focus on how to obtain effective interleaving schemes for 2-dimensional (2-D) arra...

متن کاملPerformance analysis of the error-forecasting decoding for interleaved block codes on Gilbert-Elliott channels
This paper investigates the performance of the errorforecasting decoding for an interleaved block code on Gilbert–Elliott channels in terms of the word-error probability, which is the sum of the decoder error and failure probabilities. We derive expressions by constructing several Markov chains, starting from a two-state Markov chain of the Gilbert–Elliott channel model. The derived formulas ar...
